Frequently Asked Safari Questions

Everything you need to know about our Kaudulla 4-hour safari before you book.

The best time to visit Kaudulla is from August to December when water levels in the reservoir drop, drawing large elephant herds — sometimes numbering over 200 — to the water's edge. This is when "The Gathering" is at its most spectacular. However, wildlife can be spotted year-round and the park is open throughout most of the year.
Both options offer excellent wildlife sightings. The morning safari (06AM–10AM) is calm and peaceful, ideal for close wildlife encounters and birdwatching as the park wakes up. The evening safari (02PM–06PM) bathes the landscape in warm golden light, making it perfect for photography and often seeing elephants coming to drink at the reservoir. Many guests say the evening is particularly magical for The Gathering.
Absolutely. The Kaudulla safari is fully suitable for families with children, elderly guests, and guests of all fitness levels. The jeep is comfortable, the pace is relaxed, and our experienced guides are trained to ensure a safe, enjoyable experience for everyone. Children especially love seeing the large elephant herds up close in a secure and comfortable setting.
We recommend bringing sunscreen, a wide-brimmed hat, insect repellent, a camera with a zoom lens, and light, comfortable clothing in neutral colours. A water bottle and fruit bucket are included in your package, but feel free to bring additional snacks. Binoculars are a great addition for birdwatching and spotting distant wildlife across the open grasslands.
Drones are not permitted inside Kaudulla National Park. The use of unmanned aerial vehicles is strictly prohibited by Sri Lanka's Department of Wildlife Conservation to protect animals from stress and disturbance. We encourage guests to use cameras and zoom lenses instead, which allow for stunning wildlife photography without disturbing the animals in their natural habitat.
Each private jeep can comfortably accommodate up to 6 passengers. The jeep is exclusively for your group — no strangers will share your vehicle. This ensures a truly personalised and private safari experience, giving you the freedom to spend more time wherever the wildlife action is happening.
A water bottle and a fruit bucket are included with every booking. Full meals and additional beverages are not included but you are welcome to bring your own snacks and drinks into the park. Given the 4-hour duration, most guests find the included refreshments more than adequate for the safari.
