The Experience

If you want to spend a full stretch of time truly immersed in nature and wildlife, the 6-hour jeep safari in Kaudulla National Park is the perfect adventure. Kaudulla is one of Sri Lanka's finest safari destinations, celebrated for "The Gathering" — a natural phenomenon in which hundreds of wild Asian elephants converge near the Kaudulla reservoir during the dry season from August to October. This is one of the largest elephant congregations anywhere in the world and an unmissable spectacle for any wildlife enthusiast or photographer.

This extended safari allows plenty of time to explore the park's varied landscapes, from open grasslands and dry forests to ancient water tanks that attract large herds of animals and a remarkable diversity of birdlife. Beyond elephants, you may encounter leopards, sloth bears, jackals, spotted deer, wild buffalo, crocodiles, and many bird species. The longer duration significantly increases your chances of encountering rare and shy wildlife, making this a particularly rewarding option for dedicated nature lovers.

Unlike shorter tours, the 6-hour safari includes scenic stops at picturesque points inside the park — calm lakesides surrounded by birdlife, open viewpoints overlooking the grasslands, and tranquil forest clearings where wildlife gathers. Your private 4×4 jeep accommodates up to 6–7 passengers and is accompanied by an experienced English-speaking driver-guide who brings the park's ecosystem to life. The package includes park entrance fees, service charges, VAT, and hotel pickup and drop-off from selected areas. Please join us half an hour early for a hassle-free departure.

Frequently Asked Safari Questions

Everything you need to know about our Kaudulla 6-hour safari before you book.

The peak season for the Kaudulla safari is August to October, when the dry season causes water levels in the reservoir to drop, drawing hundreds of wild elephants — sometimes over 200 at a time — to the water's edge for The Gathering. However, wildlife is abundant year-round and the park remains open throughout most of the year, making any visit rewarding.
The 6-hour safari allows you to explore deeper and more remote areas of the park that shorter tours rarely reach. It includes dedicated scenic stops at lakesides and viewpoints inside the park where you can step out, breathe in the surroundings, and photograph without time pressure. The extended duration significantly increases your chances of spotting shy and elusive animals such as leopards and sloth bears, and gives you time to experience the park's full range of habitats — from open grasslands to forested interiors.
Absolutely. The Kaudulla 6-hour safari is fully suitable for families with children, elderly guests, and travellers of all fitness levels. The private jeep is comfortable and the pace is completely relaxed. The scenic stops built into the itinerary also provide natural rest breaks, making the extended duration easy and enjoyable even for guests who might find a continuous drive challenging.
Given the 6-hour duration, we recommend coming well prepared. Bring sunscreen, a wide-brimmed hat, insect repellent, and light, comfortable clothing in neutral colours. A camera with a zoom lens and binoculars will enhance your experience greatly. Extra snacks and drinks beyond the included water bottle and fruit bucket are a good idea. You can also arrange a picnic breakfast inside the park at an additional cost — ask us when booking.
Drones are strictly prohibited inside Kaudulla National Park under Sri Lanka's Department of Wildlife Conservation regulations. Operating an unmanned aerial vehicle can cause severe stress to elephants and other wildlife. Violations may result in heavy penalties and ejection from the park. We encourage guests to use camera lenses and telephoto zoom equipment instead, which consistently produce stunning close-up wildlife shots from the jeep.
The private jeep for this 6-hour safari can comfortably accommodate up to 6–7 passengers, making it an excellent option for families, friend groups, or photography teams. Your jeep is exclusively for your group — no other guests will be added. This ensures a fully private, personalised experience with the freedom to spend time wherever the wildlife is most active.
A water bottle and a fresh fruit bucket are included with every booking. Full meals are not included, though you are welcome to bring your own food and drinks into the park. For the 6-hour tour, we also offer an optional picnic breakfast arrangement at a scenic stop inside the park — available at an additional cost. Please enquire at the time of booking if you would like to add this to your experience.
