Frequently Asked Safari Questions

Everything you need to know about our Udawalawe 4-hour safari before you book.

Udawalawe National Park is open year-round, making it one of the most accessible parks in Sri Lanka. The best wildlife sightings occur during the dry season from May to September, when animals gather around the Udawalawe Reservoir. Morning safaris (6AM–10AM) and evening safaris (2PM–6PM) both offer optimal wildlife activity, cooler temperatures, and the best light for photography.
Absolutely. This safari is fully suitable for children, families, and elderly guests. The private jeep has comfortable luxury seating and the pace is always relaxed. Our experienced guides cater to all ages, ensuring the experience is enjoyable, educational, and safe for every member of your group.
Each private jeep can accommodate up to 6 passengers comfortably. The jeep is exclusively for your group — no strangers sharing your vehicle. This ensures a truly personalised, private safari experience from start to finish, with full flexibility to stop wherever wildlife is spotted.
Udawalawe is most famous for its large herds of wild Asian elephants — sightings are almost guaranteed on every safari. You may also see mugger crocodiles, spotted deer, water buffalo, peacocks, painted storks, kingfishers, and eagles. The park occasionally surprises visitors with sightings of elusive leopards and wildcats. Wildlife sightings are never guaranteed, but Udawalawe has one of the highest elephant encounter rates of any park in Asia.
A water bottle is included with every safari. Light refreshments or breakfast may be included depending on the tour timing — please confirm at booking. Meals and additional drinks are not included. We recommend bringing light snacks, a refillable water bottle, sunscreen, and a hat for the 4-hour duration.
Tips are not included in the package price and are entirely optional. However, if you feel your driver-guide provided an exceptional experience — tracking wildlife patiently, sharing knowledge enthusiastically, and ensuring your comfort — a tip is always warmly appreciated and goes directly to the guide. There is no set amount; any gesture of gratitude is welcome.
We recommend wearing comfortable, lightweight, neutral-coloured clothing (avoid bright colours that may disturb wildlife). Bring a hat, sunscreen, mosquito repellent, water, binoculars, and a camera or telephoto lens for the best wildlife photography. A light jacket can be useful for early morning or evening safaris when temperatures are cooler. Leave unnecessary valuables at your hotel.
